Candace Desha Francis is an educator and entrepreneur with a passion for helping others learn.
Candace has been delivering child-centred education for more than two decades within the primary school environment. Her extensive understanding of curriculum development and implementation helps her adjust to meet her students’ needs. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Education, a Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Family Studies, and a Diploma in General Primary Education.
In 2019, Candace took her love of education to another level by establishing the Bold Print Bookshop. The online bookstore is her way of further supporting students by providing them with the books and resources needed to excel at school.
The bookstore also provides opportunities for readers to encounter local authors, something which Candace feels quite strongly about. Reading is one of the keys to learning and she takes this to heart by also giving younger readers a chance to interact with words in exciting ways.
Bold Print Bookshop hosts a monthly reading club during which students get a chance to discuss their ideas after reading, complete worksheets, and even interact with authors!
But even the bookstore could not satisfy Candace’s desire to serve more students and help them navigate life as they learn. When she noticed the need for additional support brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, The Desha Academy was born.
The Desha Academy focuses on holistic development by encouraging independent learning and creativity. Catering for children between the ages of three and twelve, the curriculum hinges on the four Ps of learning: preparation, presentation, practice, and performance. These are currently delivered in Mathematics, Language Arts and Creative Writing but other programmes such as Spanish and S.T.E.A.M./S.T.E.M are being developed to further encourage critical thinking and reasoning skills.
Candace has also organized and hosted two Literary Exhibitions to showcase how books and reading can truly transform lives.
